Kinja'd!!!

A fire has broken out overnight at the interchange of the 5/14/210/405 freeways. This is one of the busiest intersections in Los Angeles and likely the world. The amount of people commuting through there on a daily basis is staggering and a fire shutting down all of those freeways around there is going to have a ripple effect across the county. More importantly for me, it’s certainly going to make it smell like a campfire around home and that was my route to get up to the mountains for my backpacking trip. I was gonna take the miata to work and then come home and grab the Subaru for my trip. But now I’m likely to have to take a long detour around this so I might as well just take the Subaru now even though it means I’ll have to make an additional gas stop due to the added miles. Hopefully the wind dies down before more people are effected. Evacuations have already begun overnight.

That just down right sucks, worse than the Atlanta Interstate collapse

Yeah that sucks. The southerly route is I-15 and it could be absolutely jammed with cars for folks trying to get to Palmdale/Lancaster.

All routes through Newhall area are closed, plus 210 and 118

This looks like a fun way to get through, but yeah probably not if it has two highways worth of traffic on it.

Hopefully they get the fire controlled soon.

Yeah I went up to 2 last night and on the 210 on the way there I passed a convoy of 14 fire engines. It was quite the sight. There were notices on the freeway billboards already that the roads were closed up there.

I would take a northern route since I work Northwest anyways. Assuming I can just get out to the desert and there arent other fires that way, I can cut over to the East after that with a short detour.

Yeah that is Little Tujunga, one of my favorites! Definitely not a great way to go with said traffic though you are right. I will probably end up taking the 33 through Ojai assuming other fires dont shut that down.

Kinja'd!!!

That corridor is definitely gonna be an avoid at all costs!

Kinja'd!!!

I dont trust the 126 will stay traffic free and an excuse to go drive the 33 is fine by me anyways.

Fun fact the 5/14 interchange has collapsed TWICE from major earthquakes in the area. Hopefully third times a charm and it doesnt collapse when the next one rolls through.

Where are you going from? No fires in LA proper yet but getting anywhere in the valley will be a shit show.

Yup, I just needed to pack in the morning and replan my driving route. At least I will be forced into taking a more scenic route!

Also, if youre in the LA area and not on our email list, you should join it! Theres dozens of us

Are you CERTAIN 33 is open? It’s been hit-and-miss so I’d at least double check it. You might find it faster to go all the say to Santa Maria and take the 166 if 33's construction is still closing it .

Yeah, I’m in LA every couple of days (although I will be avoiding it today...). How do I join the mail list ?

and, I “was” supposed to move a couple of rally cars out to the desert today and tomorrow. All routes went via Newhall. Ugh. And, it’s Friday so Cajon Pass is a disaster.

Good luck!

High desert, but I’m staying the night by the airport after nearly missing an international flight last year so I will miss traffic, but I have to run errands in LA proper today so that’s going to suck.

At least google suggests I weave through the mountains, so that’s fun.

Unless a fire shuts down the 33 I should be fine as its currently open. I quite like that route anyways so it doesnt take much to convince me to drive that way. Still might just take the 126 and cut across Santa Clarita to the 14 as that is obviously the fastest route, but traffic and the current fires could easily mess that route up in short order.

Just email me at rduncan5678@gmail.com and Ill add you to the list. Been a bit since I sent out the full list anyways so I will just include you on the latest.

Oh boy yeah you are not gonna be able to do that today for sure! Routing through that area is a bad idea regardless of which way you go about it.

Yup the quakes in ‘71 (Sylmar) and ‘94 (Northridge) did some hefty damage to the area in general. With both causing the collapse of that interchange. No wonder why it looks so beefy and overbuilt today.

I took the 911 over there a couple of months ago and they still had wonky construction closures going. But it’s a fun road ( if you aren’t towing anything) if its open.

Yeah, I bet the Newhall Ranch Road Connector to Golden Valley is fun today. Worst case you can also go over on 126, up the 5 and take 138 into the AV. At least you have options.

Thanks, I’ll send a PM to that address with deets. I’m in LA a lot doing stupid-car-stuff, so that would be great.

My concern about taking the 126 is just that it could get worse and that could back up due to the other road closures. That is basically the only route open in that area aside from all the way down at the 101. And power is turned off in Fillmore and probably other areas where there are traffic lights so its bound to be a mess to get through. It should be worth taking the scenic route I would imagine as both will probably take the same amount of time.
